Big events are always a good way to fund raise for worthy causes - sometimes we have to get creative if we want to raise the big money for our chosen charity.

Ash Cox burpee half marathonEnter Ash Cox - this military man is putting his training to the test as he attempts to do the Plymouth half marathon in Burpees! The attempt will add up to a massive 35-40,000 Burpees in total and Ash will be starting the Plymouth half marathon 24 hours before his running competitors cross the start line.

We caught up with Ash to find out how he's planning to train for this mega-burpee half marathon and what made him decide to take on one of the world's most loathed body weight exercises for 13.1 miles!

Where did the idea of the Burpee half marathon come from?

I did a Burpee mile last March for Sports Relief. It started as a joke afterwards when I said "that was easy, marathon next". That quote came back to haunt me a few weeks later, but being a brash alpha male I couldn't back down!!

Ash Cox and familyWhich charities are you fundraising for?

I thought with this being such a mammoth event, I could raise some money for charity whilst having fun! The charities I chose are Help for heroes, a charity close to my heart as I'm a serving soldier and have witnessed the good work they do. The second charity is Great Ormond Street hospital, this is because I'm a father of one with another on the way. My wife and I both know we are very lucky to have a healthy son and would like to help people who are in a less fortunate position.

Burpees can be pretty stomach churning - how are you going to keep your energy levels up during the race? Have you considered your race day nutrition yet?

In terms of nutrition, I’ll have a support team with me throughout the event keeping food coming in, plenty of simple carbs throughout.  Also Kratos Nutrition will be fuelling me with fuel RXd and recovery RXd, a product I use throughout my normal regime.

How are you preparing for the Burpee half marathon?

I'm being programmed regularly by my coach Owen Satterley of Athletic Evolution. I believe that his programming alone is enough to prepare me physically for this event.

What's your current record for most Burpees in a day?

The two Burpee sessions I've done so far is a mile in 56 mins and 5 mile in 7:48.

Are there any other big Challenges on the horizon for you?

Another big challenge before the Burpee half marathon is 1 mile of rope climbing for Sport Relief. That's 352 assents of a 15ft rope. Myself and one other will chip away at this on March the 13th.

Fancy showing Ash some support? We've set up the Team Challenge to Complete 40,000 Burpees before the Plymouth Half Marathon - 28th April 2013 - time to face our Burpee nemesis, 40,000 times!
