Per minute, running is the second best way to burn calories after cross-country skiing. There's nothing better to achieve long-term fitness than establishing a regular running schedule. A lot of people start off with the occasional 5k or 10k, but keeping up the routine in the long term is the hard part. Taking this challenge will ensure you turn your newfound hobby into a lifetime habit.

To break it down, 1000km in a year is the equivalent of approximately:

83km per month
19km per week
2.7km per day

A suggested routine would be to aim for the weekly target of 19km, which can be achieved by two 5km runs, and a longer 9km run each week. Of course the breakdown is completely up to you. If you are new to running, start by aiming for about 10km per week, then you can make up the distance in the later months as you build up your stamina.
