Claire P I really want to do this challenge, but I don't live in London and I don't go there very often. Next time I'm coming to London should be to run the British 10 k, which means I will not have time to do that run... I remember walking all along the canal and back one day and I enjoyed it very much. That's why I'm hoping I'll be able to run this challenge soon.
Regent's Canal in London runs from Little Venice, just north of Paddington Basin in the west, through north London to meet the Thames at Limehouse in the east. This challenge is to run the full length of the the canal, in either direction. The total distance is approximately 15km, and is pretty easy to follow as it's an almost continuous towpath from one end to the other. The only complicated part of the route is near Angel, where the canal goes through a tunnel and the path ends. You'll need to cut through Islington and meet the canal at the other end of the tunnel (it's worth checking the route on a map).
The route is a great way to see some interesting parts of London - the canal meanders across the top of Regent's Park past London Zoo, runs through Camden Town beside the famous market, then cuts just north of the new St Pancras International station, through Angel, then east past Broadway Market, Victoria Park, finishing up at Limehouse on the Thames. If you want to reward yourself at the end of this challenge, there are some really nice pubs for lunch in Limehouse.
Rules: To complete this challenge, you must run the length of Regent's Canal in one go - no stopping allowed.

“A great run - I live in NW, and run the Grand Union and Regents Canal as far as Camden quite often. Running back from Limehouse was a really pleasant run, and as long as you do your homework in advance of arriving in Islington, it's really simple.”

Andrew M So then @steve, @jenna, @david, @simon, @joe, @rose, @willr, @sean, @zaparka, @h-lame and @stuart. @jamesuk, @ninjabiscuitm@nikos, @theplodder, @majicmonkey, @annaspanna, @sjeanmougin, @robreid and whoever else is up for the challenge. Are we ready for tomorrow? For those planning to run the whole canal (about 14.5km), please meet at the end of the canal on Limehouse basin at about 6:30/45. We'll set off at 7 on the dot, so if you're later than that you'll be playing catchup! My mobile number is 07870595470 if you need it. For those who want to Run the western stretch of Regent's Canal (approximately 6km), please meet on the tow path by the canal, as it goes under the tunnel under Islington (by Muriel st) at 7:30. We will probably be passing through there at about 7:50, so you can set off as we reach you and we'll all run the last 6km together. I've drawn a map of the route and meeting points: http://bit.ly/JKTHM8
Rose K Calling all London Runners!! Who wants to run the length of the Regents Canal with us? So looking forward to this!! Woo Hoo!!
Andrew M Right then, the date that most people could do was Wednesday 30th May, so lets take this challenge then. More people have expressed a preference to start east (at Limehouse basin) and run west to Little Venice. To allow people time to get over there, I would suggest meeting at Limehouse basin at 6:45, and starting to run at 7pm. Looks like the following people are in for some, if not all of the route: @andrew, @steve, @jenna, @david, @simon, @joe, @rose, @willr, @sean, @zaparka, @h-lame and @stuart. Sorry to @jamesuk and @ninjabiscuit that we picked a date you said you weren't free - it was the most popular. Anybody else who fancies joining us is more than welcome? @nikos, @theplodder, @majicmonkey, @annaspanna, @sjeanmougin, @robreid?
Andrew M It's been almost a year since we did the Regent's Canal challenge as a small group of Tribesports users. I'm keen to do it again, and it would love it if some of my Tribesports friends would join me. It's a pretty flat 14k run. I've created a doodle for weekday evenings in late May. If you're keen to join in, please let me know when you're available through the doodle, and I will pick a date that suits most people:
Andrew M logged 14.58 km of Running in 1:14:07 on 10 June 2011
Completed this challenge yesterday evening with @steve, @arnaud, @nikos, @benwg and @stuartknipe with support from @jenna, @joe and @johanna. Managed a time of 1:14, which works out as marginally above 5 mins per kilometer, so I'm really happy with my pace. Next up, the Summer solstice 10km 2011
Why not ask for some advice from other Challenge takers, or read some of the Challenge guides first?OK, I'll keep working at it!
