Having complete control of your breath is a key skill for freedivers.

Static Apnea is a well recognised discipline, whereby divers immerse themselves in the water (pool, lake and open water are all fine), and hold their breath for as long as possible.

This challenge is simple, and incredibly challenging at the same time: Hold a static apnea at least 3 minutes.

Please take care with this challenge - perceived wisdom is that you try this with someone else who is out of the water, and squeeze their hand every 10 seconds to let them know all is OK (they can also time you).

Hamish H responded to the guide Safety Tip

That is an interesting wikipedia page and seems to quote some good references. However, I've trained with competitive freedivers myself in an organised environment and hyperventilation prior to static breatholds and dynamic attempts was always enc...

Andrew M Static Apnea Challenge

Contributorgold Andrew M Just broke the 2 minute mark, although again, not underwater. I did keep my mouth shut and nose pinched, so hopefully should be able to do the same in the pool.

Andrew M Static Apnea Challenge

Contributorgold Andrew M First attempt at this, and out of water, but while keeping my mouth closed and my nose pinched. Managed 101 seconds, which was a lot more than I expected.

Right, it's like that is it? Going for 102 tomorrow then!

20140704144847-andrew

Yes, it's like that. 102 won't be enough though, I just did 2 minutes.

Andrew M Static Apnea Challenge

Andrew M 2 mins 30 in the pool, though it was after a pretty hefty gym session and my heart rate was still over 100 when I started. Guess I need to convince the adjudicator to come for a lazy spa-only session at the gym...

Still an impressive time. I'm sure you'll complete the challenge soon.

Jamie G Static Apnea Challenge

Jamie G Three minutes of doing nothing? I reckon this will be much easier than the 5 minute plank http://beta.tribesports.com/challenges/hold-the-plank-pose-for-5-minutes#!/

Arnaud L encouraged this.

Ah Ah Did you try while facing the computer?

20110327163321-jamie

Yeah it was easy to continue working while not breathing

20140704144847-andrew

1:53 is really impressive. I'm sure I won't be able to manage much more than a minute. I'm holding back on trying this challenge until I have someone standing by to resuscitate me.

Andrew M Static Apnea Challenge

Andrew M Used to be able to hold my breath for 3 mins - seems like a good excuse to try again. The whole "immersing in water" thing is awkward though - if I try this at the pool they will probably fish me out...

Actually, most of the people are able to hold 3 minutes their breath after a bit of practice. First of all, find a position which is comfortable while in the water (floating at the surface). You should reach easily th...
