Heard this whilst watching the ITU champs in Beijing today - not tried it myself, but makes sense - if you're a triathlete that keeps their shoes on their pedals for a quick transition, stuff your shoes with newspaper the night before to get them really opened wide, then remove the newspaper before the race - the shoes should stay opened very wide, making it easier for you to get your feet in and get pedalling away into the bike leg quickly
