That was actually the reason that I switched from the standard crunch, to the bicycle crunch, I feel it is easier to wrok the abs from the off with those, without risking any strain on the neck. It means you have to do two bicycle to every one standard crunch, but hey, thats good too! :-D

Top Tip for Crunches
Remember, when exercising we can choose where to focus our attention. The brain and the body work best when you focus the attention on the area you want to improve. Crunches are great for the abs, but its too easy to start the crunch by moving the head & neck first (you'll know if you are doing this as you'll feel strain in your neck); try to resist this and instead make the first movement come from the mid-body abs.
In other words fold the body using the abs - don't pull it up using the head first.

The tip I use for myself and to teach crunch to my students or clients at the gym is to do not put your hands behind your head with your fingers crossed, but putting them on the side of the head, on the temples, keeping arms and elbows wide open.
great
Thanks for the tip. Not only does this info save my neck but the crunch is more effective too.
Great
Thank you...will also need variations...I usually stop any kind of exercise cos it gets monotonous :(
Thank you for the reminder. I was so happy when i was able to correct my posture and there wasn't any more neck pain.
