Chris B asked the question in Disaster ... I'm injured!

calf injury

Hi all, whilst running a 10 mile race at the weekend and on for a pb of 104 minutes, my calft seemed to pop at the 8 mile stage leaving me to limp home with a dissapointing time of 109mins, I wear calf support/compression socks and had warmed up before hand as I've had a history of this before. Can anyone offer any advice?

Hi Chris, sorry to hear you're injured. I've no medical background but guessing you may have a calf strain or may have torn the calf muscle :-( I'd suggest R.I.C.E as a matter of course and if it's getting no better then maybe a visit to the doctor is required. Hopefully it's a strain and with some rest and rehab work you can get running again.

How long was your recovery?  Sounds like it a was a tear?  I'm presently recovering from a sprain,  4 weeks and counting :(

I have recently invested in a pair of compression socks (Reebok) and compression sleeves (2XU) specifically for the calves.  I am pretty amazed at how much they help with nagging calf strain/injury as well as with recovery.  I would highly recommend them to anyone with recurring calf pain or soreness.

thanks, Peter, I had a long term problem with calf strains and tears and went to a physio - he got me doing stretches on a step (toes on step and heels lowering and raising) and also coming up onto tiptoes. I'm not that great at doing them but it definitely helped along with RICE and massage.
