I taught myself to become a professional player and now I teach. According to my estimation I have hit over  a million shots, but sadly took it up rather late at 14, I wish I had started at age 2! 

But 10000 hours sounds about right.

Used this advice yesterday - worked well on some holes. Some I played the shot wrong, in shallow, flat bunkers, and with the full swing, sent the ball rocketing out the bunker! Good advice!

Make sure you buy cavity backed irons and not blade irons. You will get discouraged with golf if you don't make it easier for yourself, and it is incredibly hard for a beginner to hit blade irons well.
