Two weeks ago, Gabrielle Hall, an 8-year-old from Stockton-on-Tees, set a world record performance for her age at Stewart parkrun, completing the 5k course in just 20:30.
Gabrielle, who trains with her granddad John, 56, was the first female finisher and an incredible 27th place out of 294 competitors. The time is thought to be 12 seconds quicker than the previous record, which was held by a girl of the same age in Holland.
On her approach to training, Gabrielle’s mum commented: “She has a watch and times herself. All of the family go along to watch her and cheer her on. She has been desperate to break the age grade record at the park, and when she passed us she said ‘mum I’m going to do it’.
Despite the win, Gabrielle feels she could have gone quicker, and has very definite plans for the future: "I'm proud and very happy. My dream is to be an Olympic runner."
As the time occurred at a parkrun event, Gabrielle’s performance won’t stand as a ratified world record, although the 8-year-old has set her sights on setting an official record at a road race in Holland.
Damian B Parkrun Eve again, careful muddy local run for me I think, anyone travelling or doing anything a bit different?
Damian B Going to be a leisurely parkrun for me tomorrow (hope nobody draws me into a race!). Lots of travelling in the afternoon and dancing in the evening so need to keep my legs relatively fresh.
Damian B Conditions are looking ok at best for tomorrow so hopefully my leg will be ok and can get a good time.
Andy H I gave it a miss today due to a 48 hour hangover (getting old) and ran at 10am instead, pulled my calf after 2km and now worrying about completing jantastic and a 10k next Sunday. Karma? Sorry park run family.
Damian B Well that would be the "have your first parkrun dream" challenge complete! Needless to say it didn't go well ... nearly fell off a cliff, my Garmin watch didn't get a signal and I got lost soon after the start. Hope this wasn't a premonition!
Damian B The addict in me is already thinking about Saturday's parkrun. I do hope the weather is better.
Damian B Zero degrees, possible snow, already sounding interesting for Saturday. If I miss another I shall start to get withdrawal symptoms!
Damian B Sadly a combination of a slightly dodgy calf muscle and some crazy storms I decided not to run today so really upset about that but probably for the best. Better get myself to the gym so at least I will have done something today!
Andy H answered the question What's your favourite non home location parkrun, and why?
Conkers, gotta be Conkers. Just lovely!
Alan S Hoping to get 2015 off to a great start with a 9am run tomorrow at my local parkrun. Forecast is for heavy rain so unless i chicken out, the run in the rain challenge on here should be sorted... :)
Damian B Tribesports providing parkrun T-shirts? Didn't see that one coming! http://www.parkrun.com/news/2014/12/30/introducing-free-milestone-t-shirts-for-everyone/
Damian B Threatening to be -1 tomorrow morning here in the UK midlands, anyone else venturing out for a park run?
Damian B If my man flu doesn't get the better of me I'll be running Park Run for the first time with my new Garmin watch, will be interesting to see if this makes a difference to my pacing of the run.
Damian B Not sure what this means exactly as I'm a bit new to on-line run stuff but here's an article that might be of interest:
Kevin G RUNNING - RUN FURTHER THAN YOUR LAST YEARS TOTAL MILEAGE
Anyone fancy challenging themselves with this challenge, I hope so :))
