Winter Training

Question • 6 answers

So I'm running like crazy no matter what is going on outside.  I'm noticing my times are pretty lackluster.  I'm expecting one of these training runs to break a record, but each time I fall short.  Tonight I ran just over 5K, but I was running just a bit fa...

Newest answer

Beat my 5K time again today, that's 2 runs in a row.  I think I was just fretting over nothing.  Tonight I just focused on maintaining a steady speed that was faster than normal.  Ended up shaving another 30 seconds off.

How's your January 2013 winter running going?

Question • 17 answers

This month is by far my best January ever.  I've been running about 5 days a week.  Today I'm doing 10k inside.  Yesterday I did 12 miles outside.  My fleece was covered in snow, and my gloves and hat were froze.  I immediately took a hot bath when I got in...

Newest answer

This is my first January since I started back running, but I have done my highest amount of km's this month already and another week to go and I've felt more motivated than I have in a while.  I've enjoyed running in snow too!

Beard insulation

Question • 8 answers

So I've never really had a beard, but with running outdoors 3 or 4 times a week I'm finding that my face is the main thing that gets cold.  I've got a good system for my body and sometimes my toes are cold at first, and occaisionally my biceps or forearms g...

Newest answer

I love my thick beard, and genuinely feel that it offers some protection, as well as a nice buffer between face and bandana when running below zero.  Also, when you're bored with it and spring is coming you can shave cool long sideburns (a la Wiggo for exam...

What do you do for salt lost during long runs?

Question • 6 answers

I noticed at the end of my last long run I was covered in salt. And I also has some bad cramps after too. Do you take a salty snack with you or have some thing before or just wait until your done running.

Newest answer

Its really a matter of personal preference. I mix GU Brew at half strength for runs longer than 2 hours. I also eat peanut butter filled pretzel nuggets occasionally on longer runs. Other than that I don't track salt consumption as part of my regular diet n...

Warming Up

Question • 6 answers

I find that when I go out running in the sub zero temperatures it is natrually talking me longer to warm up. Do people recommend that I just take longer to warm up, or should I be warming up on the treadmill before heading outside?

Newest answer

Consider the cold incomfort when you go running outside as the same as the cold incomfort when you swim for the first seconds in a cool lake during summer. After a while you'll get to it, and after the 5 minutes you run, you will be like a 'lil furnace! Be...

Freezing air...

Question • 7 answers

So, one concern I am having is avoiding pneumonia and other chest type infections from night running below zero...I can keep warm with layers, but am noticing a bit of a cough coming in after warm down.  What tips do people have for avoiding illness?

Newest answer

The Illness may come from the cold air fragilizing the wall of the breathing organs. If you feel every breath is a little like sandpaper, better wear a neopren mask (in the cases of below -20'C), or wear a buff (tubular polyethylene scarf) over the nose (-1...

I've been running in 3/4 tights, a tshirt, and hat.  Upgrading to full tights, long sleeve shirt, gloves and hat.

You'll get the hang of dressing for the cold in no time. Ear and hand protection is a must at least until you warm up. A neck gator you can pull up is always good to have. I have wind pants and a good winter running jacket (Patagonia). I'm up in Ottawa, Can...

winter running

Question • 7 answers

This will be my first winter running, is there sanything I should do to condition my lungs so they don't get frosted??

Newest answer

Hi Jolene! If you can breath in through your nose, that will help warm the air before it reaches your lungs. Even breathing in through your mouth AND nose is better than just your mouth. Good luck and enjoy!

Winter running

Question • 2 answers

I have a hard time running during the winter. The cold air goes into my nose and makes my breathing really hard. I end up getting too exhausted. Any tips? or should I just buy a threadmill and run indoors?

Newest answer

Another option is to breath in through both your nose and mouth and may you can eventually work to breaking in through just your nose. Good luck!
