Mollie D David L

Contributorbronze Mollie D Sounds like you're really busy with all of your activities. You must totally be a Type A person. :) I'm just a cyclist and runner. Maybe you can give me some advice. I'm working on trying to get in shape to run my first distance run this fall. I've never done this before, but I need to find a good training schedule. Ideas would be appreciated.

Dee S David L

Contributorbronze Dee S Thanks for the follow David. May I say I am impressed with your profile. I love my boxing, recently just got a bag and bought my gloves last week, so now I can practice at home as opposed to just at the gym. Any tips for a beginner runner? I'm only running at a slow pace and I still run out of breathe easily, some days I'm better than others. Can you give me some advice. Thanks David...

Hi Dee, you are doing an awesome job. I would recommend running about 4-5 times per week, if your schedule allows it. Try 3 runs at 5km, keeping the pace fairly even, don't worry too much about the time at this stage. Then try a longer run, say 6km. If you can manage an 8km run on the weekend, again don't stress if you have to walk for a bit during the run. Start your run slowly, so that you can pace yourself to the end. Do you use a watch or some sort of monitor? Gradually build the long run, maybe increasing by 500 metres to a kilometer each week. It is a good idea to keep a record of your runs to keep you on track and motivated. Above all, enjoy your running, don't see it as a chore :)

Thanks so much for your comments and encouragement Jane. I've just been using a running app when I run, It's OK but no I don't have a watch or a monitor. I am really slow and I wonder when the moment will happen when I can run without feeling out of breath!!! But I defiantly will take your advice. Running outside is so much different to the treadmill and I love being out in the fresh air. How do I know I'm ready for a 5km race? This is a silly question; but can anyone be able to run if they train and commit to it? Good luck for the gold coast run. Is that where you live? I live in Adelaide and they dont seem to have many running events? Maybe I just cant find them.Speak to you later.

I live in Melbourne, but travelled to the Gold Coast last year to run the HM there. I think anyone can run 5km, just what time you want to do it in really is the main difference. I think enter one, and just go for it. Start off slow and run your own race. I think it is a matter of nerves, but you will enjoy the atmosphere :)
