I have always loved sports, perhaps too much. My favorite sports is soccer. I played varsity soccer in HS, US Marine Corps, and at MIT. I dreamed about getting selected to play in 1984 US Olympic Soccer Team but didn't quite make it that far. I play tennis, table tennis, bowling, basketball, baseball, and any sports with a ball. I picked up running again at the very end of June 2012 at age of 50. I ran my first 10k race in 59:31 0n September 7, 2012, and my half marathon in 1:58:42 on 14 October. Thus far, I achieved time goals for both the first 10k and the first half marathon which were under 1:00;00 for 10k and under 2:00:00 for half marathon. I am running my first full marathon with time goal of under 4:00;00 on October 28, 2012. A life is short. So, live it to fullest!!!

Stephen S Karen, thanks and appreciate your interest. At first, I was very upset with my first marathon time because I thought it did not represent all the hard works and efforts I have put in for this race. I ran 10k in 53:06 and set my 10k PB on 02 Nov which was my first recovery run after my BIG first marathon on 28 Oct. Yesterday, I ran for the second time after the marathon and set new PB again for 10k which was 49:26!!! I was very surprised and happy because I ran my first 10k race in 59:36 just two months ago. I believe this improvement was due to the training I did for the first marathon. Now that I had some time to get over the emotional parts, my first marathon was overall a great success given the situation and condition I was in. I was coming down with a cold with a little bit of fever so was not in full condition for a marathon. I waited so many years to run this marathon and I did not want to postpone it ever again. On the day of the race, I arrived at the parking lot that's located about 2 miles from the starting line over an hour before the starting time. They had a shuttle bus to take us to near the starting line. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!! It took over an hour to get to starting line and by the time I got to the starting line with all the runner walking towards the starting line, it was already 18 minutes after the gun time. I was with crowds of runners whose expected time of finish was around 5 hours. It literally took me over an hour of passing runners in front of me to get to a position where I could somewhat ran in my pace because there were too many slow runners in front of me. I estimate the distance I ran as 28 miles if not more because I was practically zig zagging through crowds from start to finish. I must have passed at least 10,000 runners during the race!!! I finish the race in 4:14:03 which was #6662 among 23,537 finishers. After 23 mile mark, I have no idea how I finished the race. I just put one foot after the other foot till the finish. I was so upset that I couldn't finish my first marathon under 4 hours. However, I guess time heals all the wounds, Considering my physical condition and late start, I am beginning to feel great and be proud of the result. I can always run again and run under 4 hours. THE FACT IS THAT I HAVE COMPLETED MY FIRST MARATHON!!! I have decided to be happy and enjoy what I have accomplished. Well, here I come, sub 4 hours, I am gonna get you!!!!!!
(Hi, Karen! I am on a business trip to Korea now. I must have written above message to you on 05 Nov and did not click the update!!! I just saw this and sending it to you now. LOL :))

Mate, you'll ace it next for sure
You've been way too hard on yourself Stephen. What a fabulous achievement - many of us can only wonder at a 4:14 timeframe - AWESOME!! Even better, you now have a real goal (and, clearly, a hunger for it), and you'll take all those learnings about buses and starting lines etc into your next one. As William says, you'll ace it. Psychologically, you've got it already !! Best of luck :)

Stephen S Thanks for the follow back, Leah! I just ran my first marathon 9 days ago. It was a fabulous experience. It took 35 years of dreaming to get it done. It is so worth it!!! Go all the way!!! Good luck.

Stephen, sometimes races don't go according to plan but you finished and it was a very respectable time. Well done and you should be very proud of yourself because I'm very proud of my relay team mate.

Thank you Mairead!!! Sorry for not posting earlier. I was really upset because the first marathon will never come again. But like you said, sometimes races don't go according to plan. I think I must have passed over 10,000 runners during the race! It was like stop and go, stop and go till I passed 12 mile marker. I am feeling better and I am going to train for sub 3:30 to qualify for the 2015 Boston Marathon. Thank you for your support. I will give my full support for your first marathon!!! Thanks again Mairead.

Stephen S Hello Jose! Sometimes all you need is a very small encouragement that will get you moving. You already have a friend who introduced TS to you and giving you that encouragement you may have needed. Now, it is up to you to take that challenge. Good luck!
Stephen S Thanks for the follow Stan! Congratulations on your new PB in 10k. Great time! I ran my first 10k on beginning of September in time of 59:36. Hence, I envy your time and will work toward setting new PBs and hoping to go sub 45 mins by the end of this year. Currently my 10k PB is at 49:26 which was set yesterday during a 10k practice run.

Well done Stephen on your PB. I am doing my first full Marathon on 18th this month. With weather getting colder I am hoping I have the correct cold weather gear ready for the run as it is a hilly Marathon in the countryside with changes in temperature going up some high hills

Wish you lots of luck on your first full marathon, Stan. It will be a great experience and a great memory. I just completed my first full marathon on 28th of October. It was a fabulous experience with over 30,000 runners taking part in Washington DC,

Thanks Steve, I think the number doing this one will be in 100's of runners rather than 1000's as in deepest Rural Cornwall in mid Autumn and very hilly
